Enter the 1st Annual Student Contest

Cowlitz PUD encourages local students to submit their original works to our 1st Annual Student Contest! We’re challenging local students to write, design, and create original written or graphical work on topics related to electricity. Graduating Seniors can enter to win $1000 scholarship. All winning submissions will be featured in our July Edition of the Connected Newsletter. Topics and type of work depends on current grade level:

  • Graduating seniors: 600-1000 word essay on The Benefits of Clean Hydropower in the Northwest
  • 9th – 11th grades: Graphic advertisement for one of our programs listed on our website
  • 6th – 8th grades: Poetry about the benefits of wind and solar power
  • K – 5th grades: Art reflecting how electricity benefits you

Entries for this year’s contest are due by May 9, 2021 and may be submitted electronically at studentcontest@cowlitzpud.org or mailed to

Contest Guidelines:

Graduating Senior Essay Theme: The Benefits of Clean Hydropower in the Northwest.

  • All work must be your own.
  • We do not accept previously published work.
  • For essays submit one essay only.
  • Format – submit your work in MS Word or doc format. Use size 12 font, double-spaced, Times New Roman with one-inch margins. Please include your name on your essay.
  • Our goal is to have a response to your submission no later than 3 weeks time.
  • All submissions must include a cover letter and a short and current bio that includes your name, school, Cowlitz County address and contact information.

9th-11th Grades: Submit an original graphic design advertisement for one of our programs listed on contest rules and details on our website.

  • All work must be your own.
  • We do not accept previously published work.
  • Submit up to three graphic designs.
  • Format – We accept high-resolution files containing your work, preferably in PNG or JPEG format, 800-1500 pixels wide.
  • Our goal is to have a response to your submission no later than 3 weeks time.
  • All submissions must include a current bio that includes your name, school, Cowlitz County address and contact information.

6th-8th Grades: Submit original poetry about the benefits of wind and solar power.

  • All work must be your own.
  • We do not accept previously published work.
  • One submission only.
  • Format – submit your work in MS Word or doc format. Use size 12 font, double-spaced, Times New Roman with one-inch margins. Please include your name on your poem.
  • Our goal is to have a response to your submission no later than 3 weeks time.
  • All submissions must include a short and current bio that includes your name, school, Cowlitz County address and contact information.

K-5th Grades: Submit original art reflecting how electricity benefits you.

  • All work must be your own.
  • We do not accept previously published work.
  • One submission per student.
  • Format – the call for original art work, we will accept no images larger than an 8.5” x 11” in any medium (digital, crayon, paint, marker, etc)
  • Our goal is to have a response to your submission no later than 3 weeks time.
  • All submissions must include a short and current bio that includes your name, school, Cowlitz County address and contact information.

 

TERMS & AGREEMENTS:

You (the writer) acknowledge that the work is your own and belongs to you.  Cowlitz PUD may solicit your approval to make revisions in the interest of style and uniformity. Cowlitz PUD retains first publishing rights on works published in print or online, the non-exclusive right to reproduce, display, and/or distribute the Submission as part of Cowlitz PUD in electronic format, as well as the right to republish your work in a digital or print.  Publishing rights revert to the author upon initial publication in the Cowlitz PUD’s Connected Newsletter. If the Submission contains material for which you do not hold copyright, any third party owned material is clearly identified and acknowledged within the text or content of the Submission.

GUIDELINES FOR ART:

Cowlitz PUD welcomes submissions from artists, photographers, and graphic designers that relate to the categories within your age group.  We accept high-resolution files containing your work, preferably in PNG or JPEG format, 800-1500 pixels wide. For the K-5th categories call for original art work, we will accept no images larger than an 8.5” x 11”.

All submissions can be electronically submitted at studentcontest@cowlitzpud.org or mailed c/o Student Contest 961 12th Ave. Longview, WA and post marked by 05.07.21
